A mid-size CPA firm in the Walnut Creek area is seeking and Audit Manager.   This is a stable, exciting CPA firm with tremendous growth.  The Audit Manager will be able to be in a highly visible position.  This company is in a highly desirable location, offers excellent benefits, a wonderful team, flexibility and ability to work on some interesting clients.
 
The Position: The Manager role is responsible for organizing and managing client assignments, tax returns, financials and projects including the timely and budgeted completion of assignment tasks and project components as well as coaching, advising, and directing team members in meeting firm, client, and self-development expectations.  The manager position serves as an intermediary between partners, clients and senior accountants.

Duties and Responsibilities:

 
  • Teamwork
    • Advises, coaches and supports team members and peers by promoting a learning environment.
    • Builds, directs and maintains motivated, empowered, diverse, and successful teams.
    • Builds strong rapport with Senior Accountants and Staff Accountants, guides and motivates them in their learning.
    • Structures work teams to successfully meet client expectations and helps develop strong client relationships.
    • Seeks to understand the client’s culture and their business.  Uses effective listening and questioning skills to help define problems, present possible solutions and identify opportunities to sell services.

  • Technical
    • Comprehensive and deep understanding of the rules, requirements, code of conduct and standards of the AICPA, and the authoritative literature established by the FASB, IRS, FTB and PCAOB.
    • Refining their skills, knowledge and expertise as a specialist in an identified technical field and / or industry.
    • Applies technical expertise and interprets laws, regulations and standards to formulate client related recommendations.
    • Solves complex business problems.
    • Has well developed consulting skills – develops an understanding of client businesses and uses this knowledge to help diagnose needs/opportunities and suggest solutions.
    • Is a competent project manager - can plan, manage and deliver quality service on time and within budget.
    • Exercises an expertise of firm technology and tax and accounting research techniques including evaluating new applications for the firm.
    • Expert in the preparation, delegation and review of corporate, individual, partnership, fiduciary and other tax returns prepared by the firm. This includes an understanding of technical research and documenting the basis of a position.
    • Assumes responsibility for the completion of tax returns and client engagements prepared by the team. This includes initiating and ensuring client projects are completed in a timely and efficient manner.
    • Manages high technical nature or high risk nature that is brought up by the Senior Accountant.
  • Account Management
    • Builds long term relationships with clients – gains trust and respect based on demonstrated understanding of their business and ability to help achieve improvement goals.
    • Maintains ongoing interest in the client’s business - understands the industry and acts as a sounding board with the ability to suggest further initiatives/improvements.
    • Maintains ongoing contact with client and listens to their needs and suggests relevant services.
    • Seeks opportunities to grow the revenue from accounts.
    • Manages a client portfolio – competing priorities, client requests etc.
    • Strengthens relationships with clients through knowledge and skill transfer.
    • Seeks client feedback as to quality of work, so as to continually exceed client expectations.
    • Establishes work schedules through effective use of project management techniques.
    • Performs a detailed review of the team’s work to ensure quality, thoroughness and completion of assignment tasks within agreed time frame.
    • Evaluates the performance of team members and profitability of client engagements.
    • Manages multiple client assignments simultaneously, ensuring overall success of each project including communicating with the client and partner on technical and service matters.
    • Organizes and controls multiple responsibilities and resources to achieve firm objectives in consultation with the partner.
    • Maintains skills that enable a detailed understanding of the client and client’s accounting procedures.
    • Drafts client reports.
    • Has the ability to negotiate and persuade clients with integrity and communicates effectively in the sales process - ensures clients have the information they need to make decisions.

    • Develops business knowledge (market/industry trends) and skills in all core competency areas.
    • Develops deeper knowledge and skills in area of specialty.
    • Contributes relevant material to knowledge management system.
    • Balances effectively work, community, family and personal commitments.
    • Pursues actively learning and development opportunities in line with the Professional Development Plan.
    • Participates actively and helps develop initiatives to increase retention.
    • Participates actively in initiatives to recruit talented people including participating in career and recruitment forums, conducting interviews and providing time to speak with potential recruits.
    • Keeps informed of recruitment needs and uses external peer network and external relationships to refer potential candidates.
    • Develops mentoring relationships with talented Senior Accountant/s.
 
Required Qualifications:

 
  • CPA
  • Working towards a Master in Tax, Accounting or Business.
  • Strong technical knowledge and skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills including working independently with clients.
  • Strong project management and client communication skills including budgeting and job completion.
  • Team management skills - the ability to coach, motivate and direct a team of people.
